Soccer
The Canadian women’s national soccer team (CanWNT) SHOCKED everyone with a big semi final win against the USWNT on Monday. The Canadians defeated the Americans 1-0 with a penalty shot goal to secure their spot in the GOLD MEDAL MATCH 🥇.
This win is really exciting for the CanWNT. It was their first time beating the USWNT in 20 years and it will likely boost the team’s confidence going into the finals against Sweden on Thursday. This will be Canada’s first Olympic gold medal match and whatever happens, it’s a huge moment for the CanWNT program.
I do think it will be a tough game for Canada. The Swedes have a perfect record at these Olympic Games and this is their chance to win a gold medal for the first time in over 30 years. BUT if Canada is able to score an early goal, their strong back line may be able to defend against the Sweden attack.

**STAY TUNED: There’s a chance the game will be rescheduled due to the Tokyo heat. Both teams are proposing a new time of Friday at 4am ET (5pm in Tokyo) but nothing has been confirmed.
Check out the fight for bronze between the USA and Australia on Thursday at 4am ET and tune in to the Canada vs. Sweden gold medal match Thursday at 10pm ET (TBD) on CBC Sports!
Beach Volleyball
It’s a sad time for Canadian beach volleyball. What started out as a potentially magical quarter finals for Canadian women’s beach volleyball quickly became a nightmare at Tokyo’s Shiokaze Park.
Both Canadian pairs lost their matches, including the defending world champions, Sarah Pavan and Melissa Humana-Paredes who hadn’t dropped a set during the entire Olympic tournament. I really thought they would bring home the gold.

And with Canada out of the race, the semi finals are set. The USA’s Alix Klineman and April Ross will go against Switzerland’s Joana Heidrich and Anouk Vergé-Dépré while Australia’s Mariafe Artacho del Solar and Taliqua Clancy take on Latvia’s Anastasija Kravčenoka and Tīna Graudiņa.
There is so much uncertainty in the air after Canada’s loss in the quarters. And at this point, I know the semis and finals will be entertaining but I have no idea who will stand on the podium.

Tune in to the women’s beach volleyball semi finals TONIGHT at 8pm and 9pm ET and don’t forget to watch the finals on Thursday at 9pm and 10:30pm ET on CBC Sports!
Track and Field
American superstar Allyson Felix will see yet another 400m final after breaking 50 in the third heat of the semis for the first time this season! Seven others will advance as well, including Shaunae Miller-Uibo of the Bahamas, Stephenie Ann McPherson of Jamaica and non-automatic qualifier Quanera Hayes of Team USA. Canadian Kyra Constantine finished 15th and will not be advancing to the final.

I’ll really be looking out for Felix in the 400m final. Winning a medal would tie her with Carl Lewis as the most decorated United States track and field athlete in Olympic history!
Canadian sisters Gabriela DeBues-Stafford and Lucia Stafford competed in the women’s 1500m semi finals this morning. Gabriela ran a season's BEST in the first heat, putting her in third place with an automatic qualifier to the Friday’s final (woooooo!!!). Lucia unfortunately just missed out on the fastest qualifier times to get her into the final. The 22-year old had a fantastic showing in her first Olympic Games and will be one to watch in years to come.

Canoe/Kayak
There is a lot of excitement on the water today in Tokyo! Medals are being given out in the 200m women’s canoe single AND the 500m women’s kayak single.
This is the first time women’s canoe races are part of the Olympic Games! And depending on their semi finals results this evening, Canadian’s Katie Vincent and Laurence Vincent Lapointe could both be racing for medals this week!

Tune in TONIGHT starting at 8:30pm ET on CBC TV, CBC Gem, the CBC Olympics app or online at CBC Sports to see Canada’s medal hopefuls in the semis (and maybe the finals)!
