Speed Skating ⏱ Women’s 5000m Final

The women’s 5000m Speed Skating FINAL is going down on Thursday as Isabelle Weidemann of Canada hits the ice again after winning a 🥉 bronze medal 🥉 in the 3000m event over the weekend.

Weidemann placed second in the 5000m back in November at the World Cup, behind Irene Schouten of the Netherlands, and is expected to do well in this race.

Canada has high expectations for its speed skating team and hopes to grab more medals than they have in the past two Olympic Games - only winning two medals each time.

Isabelle Weidemann won Canada’s first medal of the 2022 Games on February 5 and said she felt “proud and emotional” after her podium-securing race. The bronze was her very first Olympic medal, and she already has her sights set on the next one as she prepares for the 5000m and team event.

We’re all cheering for you Isabelle! Catch the women’s 5000m Speed Skating final, Thursday morning at 6:50am ET on CBC Sports and CBC Gem!

Alpine Skiing ⛷ Super G Final

After some very early morning qualification rounds, the Alpine Skiing Super G final is almost here and it’s going to be goooood!

The U.S. 's Mikaela Shiffrin may have exited her first two events at the 2022 Olympics earlier than anyone expected, but she is far from done at these Winter Games! After crashing out on her first run in the giant slalom on Monday, Shiffrin also failed to make it past five gates in Wednesday’s slalom after skiing off line just seconds into her opening attempt.

The American, who is accustomed to success as one of the greatest to ever put on a pair of skis, has now suffered two bitter disappointments in the span of a few days in Beijing. Hopefully Shiffrin can shift her attention to her other three events. Next stop, Super G!

You better believe an early exit in giant slalom won’t derail Shiffrin from attempting to tie the record for most Alpine medals by an American woman. She will be competing in the Women’s Super G finals Thursday at 9:50pm ET sooooo look out for her.

Make sure to tune in to the Alpine Skiing Super G final on CBC Sports and CBC Gem!

Olympic Biathlon 🎯 7.5km Sprint Final

Biathlon is one of the most interesting sports to take place at the Winter Olympics.

Combining cross-country skiing and rifle shooting proves to be an extremely challenging event as athletes go through a ski course interrupted by frequent stops to shoot a series of targets.

In the 7.5km Sprint event, the course is raced over three laps. The biathletes will stop twice and shoot five targets - once in the standing position and once in the prone position. If they miss a shot, they must ski through a 150m penalty loop before they can continue along the race course.

Here’s what I think going into Friday’s final… ➡️ There are a handful of countries that absolutely dominate in the biathlon. And I think Norway is coming away with the gold. Norwegian Marte Olsbu Røiseland became the first biathlete to win seven medals at a world championship in 2020 AND she already has two medals in these Games. I have a feeling she’s going to run the show in the women’s 7.5km Sprint.

And don’t quote me on this! BUT I think there’s a pretty good chance Elvira Öberg of Sweden and Dorothea Wierer of Italy will take the other two podium spots.

Cross Country Skiing 🎿 10km Classic Final

One of the longest running and ORIGINAL Olympic events, Cross-Country Skiing, continues this week with the women’s 10km Classic race being held Thursday morning.

This event is interesting, as it’s not necessarily the person who crosses the finish line first who wins. The athletes ski in 30 second intervals, and are competing for the best time.

Norway and Sweden are top contenders in this event, with Norway having won 47 gold medals in skiing since the beginning of the Olympic Winter Games in 1924. The Russian Olympic Committee also has a chance of grabbing a medal with skier Natalia Nepryaeva currently sitting on top of the world standings.

Canada has won three medals in cross-country skiing, but has not been on the podium since 2006. Will a Canadian rise through the ranks and reach the podium this year? Catch the 10km Classic Thursday morning at 1:50am ET on CBC Sports and CBC Gem.

📺 Must-see Event: Halfpipe Finals 🏂

FINALS BABYYYYY! And yes, Canada will be there! 🙌

Canadians Elizabeth Hosking and Brooke D'Hondt made it through to the Olympic women's snowboard halfpipe final. Hosking placed ninth and D'Hondt placed 10th in the qualifying. It looked a little iffy for the Quebec native to start after she took a fall in the first run, but it was Hosking's second run with a top score of 70.50 that helped her advance to the final. D'Hondt, the 16-year-old making her Olympic debut, finished with a score of 69.25, putting her in eighth after the first qualification run. Her score improved to 70.00, ultimately placing her 10th when all was said and done.

I am also SUPER excited to see Team USA’s Chloe Kim in the final. Kim made it look easy in the qualifying, finishing with the top score of 87.75. And now she has a chance to go for a second-straight Olympic gold. Remember, Kim won gold in the halfpipe at the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics, so the question is… Who will give her a run for her money?

Not far behind Kim in the qualifying were Japan's Mitsuki Ono and China's Xuetong Cai. Ono finished with a score of 83.75 and Cai totalled 83.25. Sena and Ruki Tomita – sisters representing Team Japan – also qualified for the final, placing fifth and sixth, respectively.

I am ready to see the top 12 athletes fight for gold in what will surely be a THRILLING snowboard halfpipe final. Grab your popcorn, get comfy on the couch, and don’t miss any of the final action on CBC Sports and CBC Gem tonight at 8:30pm ET.

🍁 Canada Watch 👀

YES! Another one!

It may not be gold or silver, but it’s a medal and the Team Canada women continue to add to our medal count. LET’S GOOOO!!!

Meryeta O’Dine won bronze in her Olympic debut in the women’s snowboard cross this morning. The 24-year-old British Columbian managed to hold off Belle Brockhoff of Australia in the final to claim a podium finish. This is incredible to see after O'Dine's devastating fall and concussion during a training session that ended her run at the 2018 Winter Games before it even began. Now, in this moment, look at the excitement and THAT smile! 👇😄

I would love to see an additional statistic of the women's medal count as a proportion of total medals... seems to me Women's sport is woefully under-represented in air time, but produces the majority of Olympic medals! Thanks for all your work!
