LET THE PARALYMPICS BEGIN!
The 2022 Olympic Games may be over, but another group of world-class athletes is about to take the stage. Here we go!!
Canadian Paralympic fans can prepare for nearly 150 hours of television coverage from Beijing, starting with Friday’s opening ceremony at 6:30am ET.

Between March 4-13 CBC Sports and Radio-Canada Sports will provide live streaming on multiple platforms of all five sports - alpine skiing, hockey, Nordic skiing (biathlon and cross-country), snowboard and wheelchair curling.
Competition in all five of these sports will begin this weekend and I can’t wait! Check out the TV Guide below for more detailed information on start times.
And of course, it wouldn’t be The 4% Rising if I didn’t name a few athletes you should look out for!
⛷ Slovakia’s Henrieta Farkasova is going to be a force to be reckoned with in the alpine skiing events! Farkasova started alpine skiing in highschool and went on to become the most decorated athlete at the 2018 PyeongChang Paralympics. She’s also the third-most decorated Winter Paralympian of all time, having won 12 medals. Nine of those are gold. She was born with visual impairments and skis next to a guide.
🥌 In wheelchair curling, I’ll be looking out for Zhuo Yan of China. Yan is the only woman on China’s wheelchair curling team and is the team lead! (Meaning she throws the curling rock first). This will be Yan’s first time competing at the Games. She was diagnosed with spina bifida as a baby, a condition where the spine and spinal cord don’t form properly.

I’ll also have eyes on Canada’s Ina Forrest, who will be leading this year’s opening ceremony alongside fellow Canadian and Para hockey player Greg Westlake. Forrest, 59, will be competing at her fourth consecutive Games. She won gold in the first two but is now looking to avenge her 2018 bronze medal as part of a Canadian rink skipped by fellow Paralympic veteran Mark Ideson.
Coverage of the Paralympics has improved and increased with every Games, and this is no exception. Make sure to tune in and support your favourite athletes! This is going to be such an exciting, compelling Games, you’re not going to want to miss it!
Also something to note - On March 3, Paralympic organizers announced they would not allow Russians and Belarusians to compete in the Games, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Feb 24. The decision affects 71 Russians and 12 Belarusians.
Tune in to the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Games! On CBC Sports and Radio-Canada Sports!
Dream Gap Washington Capitals Showcase
The last PWHPA Showcase on the Secret Dream Gap Tour this season is not far away!!
The fourth and final Showcase of the year will see the hosts move from the Canadian national capital to the American one, with the Washington Capitals Showcase taking place this weekend from Friday to Sunday. The tournament is being held in association with the NHL Washington Capitals, just as Ottawa’s was with the NHL Senators.
Calgary’s Team Scotiabank will be back in action alongside Teams Bauer, Adidas and Sonnet. They’ll face Team Sonnet in the Saturday semi-final, with Boston and Montreal kicking off the tournament on Friday.

Winners of the games on Friday and Saturday will meet in the Showcase Final game at 1:30pm ET on Sunday, while the remaining two teams will square off in the Showcase Consolation game at 10:30am ET.
The Capitals have recently launched ALL CAPS FOR HER to further grow participation in hockey among females. This NHL organization is helping advance the game among women across all ages and all levels of the sport and it’s a great opportunity for the PWHPA to increase viewership and support from hockey fans across North America.
All four teams are vying to take home the fourth weekend prize pot of this PWHPA season. And after a tough loss in the final to Montreal last weekend, can Team Sonnet take back the title? Make sure to tune in on CBC Sports!
WTA Abierto GNP Seguros
Tennis in 2022 continues as the Abierto GNP Seguros is underway in Mexico! Reigning champion of the event and current number 2 seed, Leylah Fernandez of Canada will look to go back-to-back.
Leylah has had a PHENOMENAL year as she made it to the finals of US Open last summer, and currently has a career-high worldwide ranking of No.19. Can she continue to impress the world? Will she grab the Abierto GNP Seguros title for a second time? We shall see!

Seeded at No.1 at this WTA event is Elina Svitolina of Ukraine, who is currently ranked No.15 worldwide. Svitolina has already committed any prize money she wins at this event to war relief efforts in her home country of Ukraine. She has won 16 WTA Singles titles as she looks for number 17!
You can catch all the tennis action, Friday through Sunday on DAZN or the Tennis Channel!
PHF
The Premier Hockey Federation season continues this weekend with another back-to-back double header! The Boston Pride and the Metropolitan Riveters, as well as the Connecticut Whale and the Minnesota Whitecaps will face off on both Saturday and Sunday.
For the Whale, the race for the number one seed is on as they try to catch up to the Toronto Six in the standings. The Whitecaps on the other hand are further behind the Boston Pride, but picking up a win or two would help close the gap – ESPECIALLY if Boston drops one or even both of their games.
Boston will face the Riveters, who are *just* slightly below the Whitecaps. It would benefit BOTH Minnesota and the Riveters for the Whitecaps to win this weekend.
Spend your weekend with the PHF as Saturday’s games kick off at 2pm and 7pm ET on Twitch, and Sunday’s at 3pm and 4pm ET. The Sunday match between Connecticut and Minnesota will be on TSN.ca at 4pm ET.
FA WSL
The top teams in European soccer will be facing off this weekend, and if you’re looking to watch some morning football, you’ll have four matches to choose from!
On Saturday morning it will be Aston Villa vs Brighton, and then Manchester United vs Leicester City. The only top four team in that lineup is Manchester United, who will hope to hold their place against Leicester, who sit much (much) further down.
Then Sunday, number one Arsenal will face Birmingham, as Reading takes on Tottenham. Tottenham and Reading are third and sixth in the standings, making for what should be an exciting matchup!
Saturday’s Aston Villa vs Brighton will start at 6:30am ET, followed by Manchester United vs Leicester City at 7am ET. Sunday’s match between Arsenal and Birmingham will kick off at 7am ET with Tottenham and Reading following at 9am ET! All games can be found on SN World, SN Now, SN ONE or the FA Player!

OH! And don’t miss the FA WSL Conti Cup FINAL between Chelsea and Man City this weekend! Emma Hayes’ side will be looking to win the Conti Cup for the third consecutive year, after beating Bristol City 6-0 in the 2021 final and Arsenal 2-1 in 2020. Now, the Blues have edged their way into the final and I can’t wait to see what happens. Especially in front if a sold out stadium!! Tune in on Saturday at 12:15pm ET on the FA Player.

International Women’s Day
ONCE AGAIN, Canadian women KILLED IT at the olympics.
And for two-and-a-half-weeks, male AND female athletes enjoyed an EQUAL share of sports media coverage.
BUT - fast forward two-and-a-half-weeks laters, and ONCE AGAIN we’re back to ‘the 4%’ - as Canadian women’s sports disappears almost entirely from our screens.
In recent years much has been done to raise awareness and ‘Break The Bias’ - the conversation is slowly gathering momentum, and decision makers and stakeholders are just beginning to pay attention. But what will it take to generate real change?
On International Women’s Day, GET IN on the conversation - as Andi Petrillo hosts a live panel with industry leaders and athletes, exploring how we can all work together - to finally Break The Bias..for good.
Why 4%?
Only 4% of national airtime is devoted to women’s sports. At The 4% our objective is to promote what, when, and where to watch women’s sports to help raise awareness and grow the audience for women’s sports on TV.
