Tim Hortons Curling Trials

The first few days of the Tim Hortons Curling Trials have come and gone and there’s already A LOT to take in. The Trials are the most pressure-filled event in Canadian curling, leaving very little room for error, especially if you get off to a slow start.

Team Homan was expected to be a strong contender to earn a return trip to the Winter Olympics in Beijing. But the team has been officially eliminated from 2021 Trials. ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!

Team Fleury is at the top of the standings right now with a 7-0 record followed by Team Jones and Team Einarson. BUT the final round robin matches of the Tim Hortons Curling Trials start today. We’ll see if the top three remain the same or if one of the other teams will slide their way into the playoffs.

Women’s standings:

The top three teams in the nine-team field will advance to the weekend playoffs!!!!!!! The top rink goes straight to Sunday’s final while the second and third place teams meet in a Saturday semi final for the other berth. ANNDDDD the winner of Sunday’s final will represent Canada at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics in February!

Check out the WEEKEND SCHEDULE.

It all comes down to this! Tune in to the Tim Hortons Curling Trials Friday, Saturday and Sunday on TSN, RDS and YouTube.

Alpine Skiing World Cup

THIS WEEKEND… World Cup ski racing is officially returning to Killington, Vt. for what is bound to be an epic battle on the slopes.

This year’s races are super important for athletes, as they’ll count toward qualifying for February’s Winter Olympics. SO, of course, athletes will be bringing their A-game as they strive towards a win at electrifying speeds with incredible technical skill and power.

Mikaela Shiffrin, a three-time overall champion, is expected to return to her usual slate of racing - every slalom and giant slalom, plus a selection of downhills and super-Gs after scaling back last season.

With the schedule changed to increase the percentage of speed races for an even split with technical races, Swiss Lara Gut-Behrami may be well-placed to win the overall (the biggest annual prize in ski racing).

✅ @MikaelaShiffrin is about to dive into the @HomeLightApp @KillingtonMtn Cup, and then shifts focus to speed for the opener in Lake Louise next weekend. When you’re the ONLY(🤯) skier (ever) to win in all six @fisalpine disciplines, the training never stops…💪 📍@CopperMtn

Shiffrin will likely duke it out in slaloms and giant slaloms with defending overall champ Petra Vlhova and world slalom champion Katharina Liensberger of Austria.

I also have eyes on Canadian slalom specialist, Laurence St-Germain. The Quebec native had her best season in 2019-20 where she totalled four top-15 finishes. SO I’m going to be showing some Canadian pride this weekend and bet on St-Germain.

Grand Prix of Russia: Rostelecom Cup

The world’s top figure skaters will be showing off their skill at the Iceberg Skating Palace in Sochi, Russia in this weekend’s Rostelecom Cup. This is the final Grand Prix stop of the season and we could very well see Russians skaters on top of each podium. BUT the showdown in the women’s events will be the intense and I can’t wait to tune in and be a part of it.

The Rostelecom Cup offers the world’s best a final shot at qualifying for the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating FINAL next month.

Russia’s conveyor belt of female stars produced 15-year-old Kamila Valiyeva. She quickly surpassed all three 2021 World Championship medalists from her nation to become the woman the beat heading into the most competitive event of the season.

Canada's Kirsten Moore-Towers and Michael Marinaro are in podium contention in the pairs competition. While Canadians Laurence Fournier Beaudry and Nikolaj Sorensen will also put up a fight following a bronze in the Ice Dance at Skate America.

A Quick Look Back: 🔥 moments from this week!

🏆 A champ was crowned: ICYMI the 2021 NWSL Championship match was beyond ENTERTAINING last weekend and the season came to an end as the Washington Spirit beat the Chicago Red Stars 2-1. The Spirit's goalkeeper, Aubrey Bledsoe, had a BIG save, denying Makenzy Doniak in the final moments of the game. Washington is now home to the ROTY (also the youngest player drafted in NWSL history) and The Shield. That's 🔥 right there! PLUS the ratings were RISING for this match. Check this out:

⛳️ This girl is on 🔥 *cue Alicia Keys*: No one can catch up to her! The championship we were all waiting for to cap off the golf season was between Jin Young Ko and Nelly Korda for the LPGA Tour’s Rolex Player of the Year bragging rights. It was the No. 1 vs. the No. 2 in the world… Ko defeated Korda and shot a 63, finishing with a 23-under par tournament record. This was Ko's 12th LPGA title and it earned her Player of the Year honours for the second time in just three years.

⛹️‍♀️ Handles for dayssss: Zaila Avant-garde is the 2021 SportsKid of the Year! The 14-year-old is the Scripps National Spelling Bee champ, an avid reader AND can handle a basketball like no other. Avant-garde, as her name puts it, is as creative as can be with her handles, holding MULTIPLE world records for dribbling. Even Sue Bird gave her a shout out! Avant-garde’s passion for competing and learning gave her this honour, and I don't know about you, but it's 🔥 moments like this that make me feel warm and fuzzy about the future of women’s sports.

“I feel like winning Scripps has put me on a platform where I can now just be a person for people to look at and see, ‘If she can do it, she’s just a normal girl. I’m a normal girl too, I can do it.’ ” @Basketballasart was ecstatic to be named SportsKid of the Year 😁
